Dutch forest and nature areas

The Netherlands is internationally known for its tulips, wind mills, wooden shoes and dikes, but certainly not for its forests and nature areas. However, the Dutch forests and nature areas have some very special features that might be of interest to you.

Possibly the most interesting issue is the way these areas are managed in one of the most densely populated countries of the world with 16.3 million inhabitants. This has an immense effect on our natural areas.

The purpose of this booklet is to inform readers about some of the key issues and features of Dutch forests and a limited number of other nature areas, e.g. heathlands and drift sands. It describes the past, present, and future of these Dutch natural areas by providing statistical information and a description of the various roles the Dutch natural areas play in peoples’ lives and the way this is reflected in their management. A list of relevant organisations is included in order to provide further information.
